The Save Romania Union (USR) today requested the convening of a joint meeting of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate to discuss the revocation of Toni Greblă from the position of president of the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP). USR believes that Greblă has not fulfilled his duties and that his presence at the head of AEP represents a major risk for the smooth conduct of the elections in Romania.
“What confidence can voters have in an institution that is supposed to tightly control the financing of the electoral campaign, but that does not self-report for expenses 0? But in a man who, having the position of president of AEP, has dubious connections with close associates of the extremist candidate who reached the second round of the presidential elections, while his wife has no qualms about openly campaigning for him? The Permanent Electoral Authority is the institution that should ensure the vote of Romanians, give them the certainty that the elections are held correctly, that any vote is freely expressed and defended. However, what we saw in the June and current elections shows that Toni Greblă is a danger to democracy in Romania. I hope so PSD and the PNL to understand the danger and that he must be dismissed as a matter of urgency”said Ionuț Moșteanu, the leader of USR deputies.
This is not the first time that USR requests the dismissal of Toni Greblă, the request also took place after the elections of June 9, when the electoral process was affected by numerous deficiencies and accusations of fraud. Although the USR’s request was ignored at the time, Greblă continued to coordinate the parliamentary and presidential elections, and the results were criticized for major irregularities.
“Toni Greblă managed to definitively compromise the main pillar of a democratic society, namely the voting process and the election of those who lead Romania. Such a thing cannot be overlooked. Toni Greblă destroyed the confidence of Romanians in the right won 35 years ago, that of freely choosing their representatives and leaders both at the local and central level, the election of the country’s president”said Narcis Mircescu, the leader of USR senators.
USR also emphasizes the lack of reaction of AEP in the face of critical situations related to the financing of electoral campaigns. The authority received the statements of Călin Georgescu, who claimed that he did not invest a single leu in his presidential campaign, although such an electoral approach involves considerable costs. In parallel, the General Prosecutor’s Office has started an investigation into the funding irregularities, which highlights AEP’s shortcomings in campaign monitoring.
USR expresses its hope that the parties in the governing coalition will understand the seriousness of the situation and support the dismissal of Toni Greblă, in order to restore citizens’ trust in the electoral process in Romania.
