The current stadium, inaugurated in 1960

More than six decades have passed since the construction of the football stadium in Hunedoara (video), the place where thousands of locals passionate about football could cheer on their Corvinul Hunedoara team.

In the 1950s, the old stadium of the city, where the local team “Metalul” played, then called “Energia” (the future Corvinul), gave way to a residential area, and the new sports base “Corvinul” was then designed to the most modern standards from Romania in those years.

The Corvinul Stadium, with a capacity of 16,000 seats, was inaugurated on May 2, 1960, on the occasion of the youth celebrations and the football match between Corvinul Hunedoara and CFR Arad, which ended with the victory of the hosts, with a score of 1-0.

In the summer of 1962, at the Corvinul Stadium, about 30,000 people – according to the newspapers of the time – attended the speech of Nikita Khrushchev, the former leader of the Soviet Union during the Cold War, who was visiting Hunedoara. Also here, in 1982, thousands of people attended the football match between Romania and Cyprus, from the preliminaries of the 1984 European Championship.

In the 80s, Corvinul returned to Romania’s first football league, and for almost two decades it recorded the best performances in its history, with the exception of 2024, when it won the Romanian Football Cup and participated in the European qualifiers League.
