The “Neagra” bison reserve, within the Bucșani Forest Encirclement, managed by the Dâmbovița Forest Department, received a new tenant: a female bison cub, only seven months old, named Roșia.
“Meet Roșia, a 7-month-old female bison calf, the newest resident of the Bison Reserve
All specimens in the reserve have names beginning with the particle “Ro”, as a sign of connection with Romania.
“Rosía is beautiful, a bit shy, protected by the other bison and does not detach from her mother”write Romsilva representatives.
The reintroduction of the bison in Romania’s fauna began in 1958, when Romanian foresters brought two bison, Podarec and Polonka, from Poland, after almost two centuries after the disappearance of the species from the country.
Gradually, several nuclei were formed, and the bison reconnected with the Romanian forests.
Romsilva manages three bison herds: in Bucșani, Hațeg and Vânători-Neamț, with a total herd of over a hundred specimens.
