A European city extremely popular among tourists holds a surprising record: here you pay the most per square meter of accommodation in the world. Although the rooms are among the smallest, the nightly rates are among the highest, according to a study by the experts at Deluxe Holiday Homes.
The analysis compared the average price of hotels in the world’s most visited tourist cities and compared it to the average room size. The result shows that tourists in Venice end up paying huge amounts for extremely limited spaces, according to express.
According to the research, Venice has rooms with an average area of only 12 square meters, but the price reaches 170 euros per night. The combination of limited space and huge demand pushes this destination to first place in the world’s list of most expensive cities based on value per square meter.
Paris and London are next in the ranking. In the French capital, tourists pay an average of 159 euros per night, which is about 10 euros per square meter.
London is very close, with a difference of just 26 cents per square metre, making the two cities almost identical in terms of the ‘value’ of space.
“Small rooms aren’t always a bad deal, but this is a perfect example of what happens when space is limited and demand is huge. Staying in a 12 square meter room is basically like living in a parking space, and paying almost $200 for it shows how much prices are going up due to mass tourism.” said a spokesman for Deluxe Holiday Homes.
In historic cities, with old buildings, the competition for space is fierce, the expert claims: “You’re fighting millions of other people for a tiny piece of the city, so you end up paying a premium price, no matter how small the room is.”
