What changes are proposed in the structure of the 2026-2027 school year. The Ministry of Education put the project in public consultation

The Ministry of Education launched in public consultation the project of the structure of the school year 2026-2027, which foresees changes regarding the organization of courses and vacations, including the reduction of vacation options at the decision of school inspectorates.

The Ministry of Education and Research launched, on Friday, in public consultation the structure project for the 2026-2027 school year. In the version proposed and released for consultation, the courses of the 2026-2027 school year begin on September 7, 2026 and end on June 18, 2027. For the VIIIth grade, the courses end on June 11, 2027, and for the XIIth grade, the courses end on June 4, 2027, according to the project published on the Ministry’s website.

“The main change, compared to the structure of the previous school years, aims to reduce the intervals (weeks) between which it is possible to decide for the vacation at the decision of the school inspectorates to two (compared to three). The proposal is based on the fact that in previous years, at the national level, it was predominantly opted for two intervals (weeks) out of the three proposed (one of the intervals was always the option of a maximum of three counties, the rest opting for the other two intervals/holiday weeks).Therefore, the holiday week at the decision of the county/city school inspectorates is proposed for the period February 22 – March 7, 2027”show the representatives of the ministry.

According to them, regarding the proposed interval for the two weeks of vacation between which one can opt (February 22-28/March 1-7), the proposal is justified by the need to create a balance in terms of the number of consecutive weeks of courses.

Exam period

According to the quoted source, in designing the structure of the 2026-2027 school year in this form, at the level of the Ministry of Education and Research, the following were considered:

– the period of conducting the competency tests within the national Baccalaureate exam 2027 in the last two weeks of classes of the 2026-2027 school year;

– conducting the national assessment for the 8th grade graduates in the 2026-2027 school year and the written tests of the national baccalaureate exam in the next two weeks after the completion of the courses. In this regard, we specify that the start of the school year on September 14 (compared to September 7, the current proposal) would imply the end of classes on June 25 and, therefore, delaying the holding of national exams by one week);

– the organization of the simulations of the written tests of the national exams (the national assessment and the national baccalaureate exam) in March 2027.

“We note that these projections regarding the performance periods allocated to the national exams are indicative, the performance calendars to be established later, through separate documents, after completing the decision-making transparency process”it is also shown in the project.

According to the proposal, the courses will take place between September 7, 2026 – October 23, 2026, November 2, 2026 – December 22, 2026, January 11 – February 19/February 26, 2027, as the case may be, at the decision of the county/city school inspectorates of Bucharest, March 1/March 8, 2027 – April 23, 2027, – May 5 2027 – June 18, 2027.

Students will be on vacation between October 24, 2026 – November 1, 2026; December 23, 2026 – January 10, 2027; one week, at the decision of the county/municipality school inspectorates of Bucharest, between February 22 and March 7, 2027; April 24, 2027 – May 4, 2027; June 19, 2027 – September 5, 2027.
