In the seat of Vâlcea county, the first fixed speed cameras have already been installed on the city's roads following a campaign by the local public administration to discourage those who habitually violate.

On this occasion, the representatives of the Municipality clarified their intentions regarding the purpose of these devices, after “The Truth” pointed out that the legislation on the operation of fixed speed cameras is still not in place, meaning that those caught by such equipment while driving above the legal speed limit cannot be held liable.

“At least they will scare and reassure the drivers in their pockets”specified at the time of the initial announcement the mayor of Râmnicu Vâlcea, Mircia Gutău, also emphasizing the fact that speeders will receive the fine by mail.

Later, it was mentioned that, in fact, it is about informative radars, powered by solar panels, dedicated exclusively to the awareness of drivers, which can also store information that could lead to the sanctioning of traffic participants.

“Drivers will be able to stay within the legal limits”

“The first three pairs of informative radars have already been installed on the streets of Râmnicului, and drivers who pass on Dem Rădulescu Boulevard (in front of the Lidl Supermarket), on Ostroveni Street (in the area of the gazebos) or on Strada Morilor, will thus be able to see exactly what is the speed at which it is traveling and to be within the legal limits”announced the representatives of the Râmnicu Vâlcea City Hall, noting that two other pairs of “radar information” will be installed in the next period on Calea lui Traian Nord (Supeco area) and on Strada Stolniceni (near the intersection with Strada Bâlciului).

Solar-powered speed cameras for the 'sole purpose' of driver awareness

“The five areas were chosen either as a result of the frequent reports of exceeding the legal speed, or because of the need for additional protection of pedestrians, and have the sole purpose of making drivers aware of the need to stay within the legal speed limits to avoid any accidents. The informative radars are powered by solar energy through a photovoltaic panel”also specified the representatives of the Municipality.

“I can store information”

They claim that fines can also be issued, without specifying how and in what manner they will be applied, although the Traffic Police specialists mentioned for “The Truth” that there is currently no legal framework regarding sanctioning by means of fixed radars, as the devices have not yet been approved.

“They can store information on recorded speeds on the basis of which, later, additional measures can be ordered to detect and penalize speeders. Such warning systems are also installed in other problematic areas from the point of view of car traffic in the country (at the entrance to Craiova on DN65, at the entrance to Pitesti on DN73, on DN15, in the counties of Mureș and Cluj, in Rădăuți – Suceava, in Calafat – Dolj etc.) or in Vâlcea county (in Vaideeni or Roești)”, representatives from the public administration that implemented the system at the local level also specified.
