After 5 years at the helm of the PSD and over a year at the helm of the Executive, Marcel Ciolacu takes into account a candidacy for the head of the Buzău County Council, according to the press, where he held over the years different functions, from the head of the PSD Buzău youth organization, to the president of the PSD organization.

“I do not exclude a possible candidacy“, Marcel Ciolacu said. The political calculations were also confirmed from the management of PSD Buzau. “There are discussions inside the PSD about a candidacy for the County Council of both Marcel Ciolacu and another candidate, because it is normal to have these discussions, considering that there is a lot of organizing the elections somewhere this fall,” The leader of PSD Buzau, Romeo Lungu, confirmed.

Marcel Ciolacu remained after the resignation of the Government leadership and from the PSD peak with the mandate of parliamentarian, but the head of CJ Buzău could ensure a connection with the new PSD leadership, in the context in which the party must choose a new head in autumn.

“I think, however, from the moment you were prime minister, to descend a step below, to redevate, as I say, leader locally, it is not the best option. (…) It is not a very important victory, it is a narrower victory, but in other places I do not think it could be applied, after it was the first, after it was left, It returns, because otherwise, it is harder to notice in the parliamentary activity.
Explains for the “truth” the political scientist Radu Carp.

On the other hand, the head of CJ Buzău would be a “warm” post. “Marcel Ciolacu is assured a quiet future” Thus, the editor-in-chief of Chief Ion M. Ioniță, who explains that his career at the top of politics has been concluded.. “This is how all the PSD leaders happened, they were removed. Even if they returned to the party, they could not continue their influence, the power. (…) will be a warm exit, that is, a warm job that will ensure a quiet life, a kind of retirement at the workplace. (…). the editor-in-chief of the Chief Ion M. Ioniță is the opinion.

The fate of the PSD chiefs

Indeed, over the years the PSD has acquired a long tradition in mazili their party leaders who have lost the presidential elections. Starting with Adrian Năstase and until Viorica Dăncilă, they all left the political formation.

He took over the interim management of the PSD in November 2019, after the resignation of Viorica Dăncilă, and in August 2020 he won a mandate full of head of the party. Dăncilă resigned as a result of the loss of the 2019 presidential elections. For about two years he was the first woman prime minister, and at the PSD leadership stayed for almost a year, after Liviu Dragnea, who proposed it in the Government leadership, was sentenced to imprisonment in the file of fictitious employment. Dăncilă later announced his departure from the PSD, stating that he was not here anymore. In fact, it was excluded from the list of PSD candidates of Teleorman County for the 2020 parliamentary elections. He obtained a position of counselor at the BNR, but left here and joined an obscure party, the nation party, together (us), where the president of the formation was voted in April 2022.

Given his situation, Liviu Dragnea is the one who left the fastest of the political formation. Instead, other former PSD leaders, such as Nastase, Geoana or Ponta were more difficult to remove. Victor Ponta lost the 2014 presidential election, in front of former President Klaus Iohannis, in 2015 resigned from the party leadership after the opening of the Turceni-Rovinari file, and in 2017 he was first excluded from the political formation. He also had a second exclusion, in March 2025, after returning, although he had found Pro-Romania. The second exclusion came after announcing its independent candidacy for the presidential elections, although the Social Democrats decision was to support the PSD-PNL candidate Crin Antonescu. He lost the presidential poll, but remained with the position of deputy obtained on the PSD lists.

Mircea Geoană remained without the position of PSD president in February 2010, two months after losing the presidential elections in front of Traian Basescu. In 2011 he was excluded from the PSD, as a result of pressure from Victor Ponta, according to subsequent reports. In October 2019, Mircea Geoană was appointed deputy secretary general of the North Atlantic Alliance, and the appointment was due to an agreement between former Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă and former head of state Klaus Iohannis. However, he resigned in 2024, to run for unclear again at the presidential elections.

A similar fate also had Adrian Năstase, who was defeated by Traian Basescu in the 2004 presidential elections. Two years later, in March 2006, he was made of PSD leader in a meeting organized by Mircea Geoană. At that time, following a scandal that culminated with his departure from the head of the room and from the PSD chief, Nastase spoke about a mechanism against him.
