The number of pensioners from the state social insurance system was, in February 2024, 4,602,505, according to the statistics available on the website of the National Public Pension House, with a total of 10.54 billion lei due to them. Average pension in February 2024 a 2,290 lei, compared to 2,003 lei in February 2023, but ten times lower than the magistrates' pension. Most are pensioners who retired at the legal retirement age – almost 3.7 million, more than 2 million of whom are women. The average retirement pension was, in February 2024, 2,564 lei.
Covasna county has the fewest pensioners in the state social insurance system – 44,709, the average pension in this county being 2,089 lei, while in Prahova there are more than four times as many (189,261) and they also receive considerably higher pensions , in the latter county the average pension amounts to 2,415 lei.
However, the pensioners with the lowest incomes are in Botoșani county, where the average pension is below 2,000 lei. There are 76,538 pensioners in Botoșani, and the average pension is only 1,812 lei. In 11 other counties the average pension does not even reach 2,000 lei, and these are: Vrancea, Giurgiu, Vaslui, Satu Mare, Călărași, Bistrita, Olt, Buzău, Suceava, Teleorman and Ialomița.

At the opposite pole, with an average pension of just over 3,000 lei (3,044 lei), is only Hunedoara county. It should be noted that the data for Bucharest are reproduced by sector, and in the case of Bucharest there are significant differences. Thus, while in Sector 1 it is registered the highest average pension in the country – 3,407 lei, in Sector 5 the average pension does not even reach 2,500 lei.
In February 2024, in the CNPAS records, out of a total of 4.6 million pensioners, there were 395,133 disability pensioners (the average pension for this category, resulting from the calculation of points, being 964 lei) and 486,222 pensioners with periods of work in agriculture.
Also, another 83,760 pensioners who received their pension in February are among those who worked only in agriculture, in their case the average pension resulting from the calculation is only 900 lei.
Retirees are looking forward to this autumn when their pensions will be recalculated under the law which takes effect on September 1, 2024, with most hoping to get extra money as a result of the process.
