The director of the National History Museum of Romania, Ernest Oberlander Târnoveanu concerns, at least at the moment, with resignation the decision of the Minister of Culture, Natalia Intotero to dismiss him after the robbery scandal at the Drents Museum in Assen, the Netherlands.
“It is a decision that you consider it appropriate”
The Minister of Culture, Natalia Intotero announced on Tuesday, January 28, that she will dismiss the director of the National History Museum of Romania, Ernest Oberlander Târnoveanu. The decision was taken after the scandal triggered by the robbery at the Drents Museum in the Netherlands and theft of the Getic treasures exhibited in the respective location. “We made a request to Ernest Oberlander-Târnoveanu to urgently communicate all the steps related to the organization of the exhibition, from the opportunity to take place at that museum and all the correspondence with the manager of the Dutch museum. I have not received information on the opportunity of this exhibition. I had a meeting with the director of the museum by which I exposed my dissatisfaction with the communication mode in the crisis situation. ”said Natalia Intotero at a press conference held at the Ministry of Culture.
So far, the director of MNIR has received this decision quite reconciled. He stated for the “truth” that the decision to dismiss is perfectly legal and that he does not want to comment more on the subject. “I do not comment in any way because it is the right of the minister to decide to terminate a management contract. I have nothing to comment on because it is a decision that it considers it appropriate. It is legal! ”said Ernest Oberlander Târnoveanu for “Adevărul”. Recognizing the legality of the decision, the director of MNIR seems to understand that he will not attack this decision in any way.
The director of the museum believes that it was a robbery to order
Prior to the decision of Natalia Intotero, Ernest Oberlander Târnoveanu told the press that she is only “a scapegoat” and refused to resign. He defended himself and said that the artifacts were exhibited in the Netherlands without a prior government decision, because he did not involve the collaboration of several institutions. In addition, the director of MNIR also stated on another occasion, after theft of the helmet and Getic bracelets that all the safety conditions were insured at the Museum Museum. Including the fact that the contract was provided for 24 hours a day, plus the exposure of treasure parts in secure windows.
At the same time, it also advanced the assumption of a theft to order. We remind you that on the night of January 24 to 25, 2025, in the Drents Museum in Assen, the Netherlands, there was a break. The thieves shot down a wall with the help of dynamite and managed to steal from the international exhibition “Dacia! Empire of Gold and Silver ”, the famous Golden Gold from Coțofenești plus three more Dacian bracelets, also made of gold. These exhibits were brought from the National History Museum of Romania six months ago, based on a collaboration with the Museum in the Netherlands.
