When the fishing ban starts. Some species of fish are prohibited for capture all year round

For 60 days this year, from April 9 to June 7, 2024, any form of fishing is prohibited, and the measure refers to any living thing that lives in water (fish, crustaceans, molluscs and others).

Outside of this period there are also periods of prohibition, depending on the species. The Ministry of the Environment established a ban on pike, between February 1 and March 20, 2024, and on perch and perch, between March 20 and June 7, 2024.

There are no restrictions only on private lakes and ponds.

According to Order 561/2023/11/2024, regarding the establishment of periods and areas of fishing prohibition, as well as areas of protection and biological restoration of living aquatic resources in 2024, in addition to other years, measures were established which they come to restore watersheds, where fish species are endangered or in decline.

Prohibition periods are established on the Danube, Prut, Lake Stânca Costesti and in the Meleaua Sfântul Gheorghe economic zone, up to Ciotic, the coastal lakes of the Razim Sinoe complex. Special attention, for the restoration of aquatic resources, was given to the protection zones on the Mureș, Crișul Repede and Olt rivers.

Additional measures for leeches, crayfish and the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve

Approximately 23% of Romania's territory is a protected area, and the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve represents the largest and most compact protected area.

This year, between April 9 and June 7, 2024, commercial, recreational/sports and family fishing of any species of fish, crustaceans, molluscs and other live aquatic creatures is prohibited in the Meleaua Sfântu Gheorghe economic zone up to Ciotic.

Outside of this period, recreational/sports fishing of pike, zander, catfish and carp species is allowed, but only with the immediate release of all catches of these species (catch & release), with the retention of only one specimen/day, of one species , on the territory of the RBDD.

Those who fished in the Danube Delta cannot transport a quantity of fish greater than 10 kg/fisherman or 15 kg/family, regardless of the number of days they enjoyed fishing and vacation.

Another prohibition concerns the use of nets on the territory of the ARBDD, when the level of the Danube river near the town of Tulcea is below 50 cm. It is allowed to use this fishing method, with a mesh size of 70 mm on the Danube river, its arms, the Old Danube, Musura Bay and Meleaua Sfântu Gheorghe.

Another novelty this year, according to the Order of the Ministry of the Environment, refers to the capture of medicinal leeches, which is prohibited from July 1 to August 31, 2024. Also in the territory of the Danube Delta, the capture of female crayfish is prohibited from January 1 to April 9 2024 and September 1-30, 2024, and for males, between September 1-30, 2024.

Among the fish that are protected in 2024 on the territory of Romania are endangered species as well as fish, which have an important role in the ecosystem. Among the species that you are not allowed to retain/catch are sturgeon (mullet, bream, brown trout, red bream), river bream, common bream, bream, bream, bream, bream, grayling, peccary, guvid, eastern bream, characuda , mihalțul, etc.

For violation of the fishing law and the order regulating the prohibition there are quite serious sanctions.

Fishing without a permit is sanctioned with a fine from 300 to 600 lei, as is keeping fish below the legal minimum size.

Fishing in protected areas or during the prohibition period is sanctioned with a fine from 600 to 1,000 lei and withholding of the fishing permit.

For poaching, fines can reach up to 10,000 lei or a sentence of up to 3 years in prison if the act is serious.
