According to sources cited by G4Media, during the meeting of the National Political Bureau of the PNL on Monday, January 13, two local leaders proposed that the party detach itself from the image of President Klaus Iohannis and ask him, publicly, to leave the position of president of Romania.
It is about Robert Sighiartău (Bistrita) and Adrian Cozma (Satu Mare), two of the liberals who believe that the departure of Klaus Iohannis from Cotroceni would ease the political situation and would be a first step towards overcoming a critical period.
However, the initiative of the two was not appreciated by the central leadership of the party as a viable solution, considering that such a move would generate even greater political instability.
“A resignation, let’s say, tomorrow, do we think it will solve the economic problems and all the imbalances that Romania has? That’s a question. From my point of view, it is very important in this period, but not only in this period, until the presidential elections and after, to maintain our country in an area of stability”, declared Ilie Bolojan during a show, when he was asked about a possible departure of Klaus Iohannis from the presidency.
In this context, on Monday, the president of the PNL said that, over time, inside the PNL there were always voices that challenged Klaus Iohannis, but he wanted to emphasize that those who criticized him then were not the who criticizes him now.
“He had critics, but not from those who criticize him today and, as I told you, it was good to have a critical spirit over many years, which many of his colleagues, unfortunately, do not have had. And I believe that someone who will be judged by history and who belongs, whether we like it or not, to a period that is ending must be left in this situation”. the PNL president somehow defended Klaus Iohannis.
“It was good to have a critical spirit over many years, which many of my colleagues, unfortunately, did not have. (…) For me, personally – that these days we had more discussions on these strategic topics, what to do, how to do it – I would have liked it if, in the past years, when some of the colleagues were just thinking what someone would want and they anticipated certain wishes and executed them, I would have liked them to have a critical thinking then and when they made all kinds of decisions from the festival of democracy and other decisions in PNL which did not help our party or the balance in this country. He should have thought better then, because it’s very easy when someone is at the end of their career to start hitting on someone, especially if you are from the party area that was relatively close in the past years. I have always tried to treat things in a balanced way, and think that I have an additional responsibility now, given the position I hold, and I believe that we must act responsibly during this period, including from the point of view of the stability of our country”. Ilie Bolojan also declared.
