Who is Mihai Dimian, the PNL proposal for the position of Minister of Education

The Political Bureau of the PNL met on Monday, March 2, and during the meeting the proposal for the position of Minister of Education was officially validated, with the rector Mihai Dimian being nominated.

“On the initiative of the president of the PNL and the prime minister of Romania, Ilie Bolojan, it was proposed and validated, unanimously, for the position of Minister of Education and Research Mr. Mihai Dimian, rector of the “Ștefan cel Mare” University in Suceava.

Rector Mihai Dimian is supported by PNL as an independent, the party says, with the mission of contributing to the development of the education system in Romania in accordance with the government program, while continuing the efforts to make education more efficient.

Who is Mihai Dimian?

Born in Onești, Mihai Dimian is 51 years old, married and has a child. He has a degree in Mathematics (1993-1997) and Physics (1997-2001) at the “Al. I. Cuza” University in Iasi and holds a master’s degree in Dynamic Systems and Theoretical Mechanics at the same university.

He obtained his PhD in Electrical / Electronics Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA (2001-2005).

He began his academic career as a research assistant at the University of Versailles St. Quentin, France (2001), then at the University of Maryland, USA (2002–2005) and at the Max Planck Institute for Applied Mathematics, Germany (2005–2006). Since 2007, he has been working at the University of Suceava.

Being appreciated by both the students from the USA and those from Romania, Mihai Dimian received the excellence award “Teacher of the Year”from the Student Council of the School of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Science at Howard University in Washington DC and the distinction of “Professor Bologna” from the National Alliance of Student Organizations from Romania.

Mihai Dimian holds the position of rector of the “Ștefan cel Mare” University in Suceava from February 2024.

Previously, between 2012 and 2024, he was vice-rector of the university, coordinating the scientific research activity, and in 2018 he provided the interim position of rector during the period when university prof. Dr. Eng. Valentin Popa was Minister of Education.

He contributed to the development of over 30 new study programs at “Ștefan cel Mare” University in Suceava, increasing the number of students to 11,500, of which over 15% are international.

It actively collaborates with pre-university education through Olympiads, competitions and science camps. Politically unaffiliated, he voluntarily got involved in the management of the refugee crisis in Ukraine and in the economic development of the region, attracting IT companies and participating in smart city projects.

In 2021, Dimian received the title of Honorary Citizen of the municipality of Suceava, reports the local press.
