Who is the only candidate approved by the PSD for the presidential elections

The only candidate wanted by PSD in the presidential elections is Marcel Ciolacu, according to antena3.ro. The Prime Minister had, over the weekend, discussions with the PSD organizations about a possible candidacy.

Marcel Ciolacu wanted to know not only the opinion of the organization leaders, but also the opinion of PSD mayors. There was not a single organization that disagreed with his motion and candidacy, the quoted source said.

The purpose of the discussion was not only for Ciolacu to find out if there are organizations against a candidacy, but also to see what the one who will represent the party in the presidential elections should do for them, if he becomes president, according to some social-democratic sources.

From this consultation made over the weekend, Marcel Ciolacu will synthesize some ideas that he will use in the candidacy program.

It is not known when Marcel Ciolacu will announce his candidacy, but the PSD leader says that this announcement will not be made either on social networks or on television, but first, within the party, according to Antena 3.

It is certain that this must happen by August 22 – the deadline for submitting candidacies to the Social Democratic Party, including the motion with which the candidate will present himself in the presidential elections.

“I entered the statutory area”

We remind you that, on Friday, August 9, before the PSD National Political Council meeting, Marcel Ciolacu was asked if he would notify his colleagues about his possible candidacy for the seat in Cotroceni.

“It will be a discussion. It’s normal (…). We have entered the statutory area, today we are approving what are the conditions for registration, what are the conditions for the party, how we go with the motion for candidacies within the party. I will come with a team, naturally I also want changes in this team. That’s why we wanted to expand it with four more vice presidents per domain. Two rounds of elections have passed: local and European parliamentary. It is normal to take this into account“, said the prime minister.

Marcel Ciolacu: “there was no request for an independent candidate to run from the PSD”

Asked if it is possible to change the rules so that independent candidates can also enter the internal party race, Ciolacu said:

There was a discussion inside. I had this discussion with my colleagues. We all left this gate open. Until this moment there has been no request of an independent candidate to run from the Social Democratic Party”.

We remind you that the president of the National Liberal Party, Nicolae Ciucă, announced in July that he will run for the presidential elections, but he must obtain the party’s approval, specifying that he will go to the party’s branches to discuss his candidacy.

Elena Lasconi, the head of the USR, and George Simion, the leader of the AUR, also entered the race for the Cotroceni seat.

Romanians go to the polls to elect their new president on November 24 (first round) and December 8 (second round, if necessary), in 2024.
