Romania has the highest path of road deaths in the EU, with about 77 deaths per million inhabitants in 2024. The EU average for road deaths is 44 deaths per million inhabitants. An interesting debate on Reddit addresses the subject of the speed with which Romanians circulate in cities.

Romania continues to be the negative champion of the European Union at road mortality. In 2024, our country registered about 77 deaths per million inhabitants, almost double compared to the EU average, which is at 44 deaths per million.
Against this background, a seemingly simple question posted on Reddit aroused hundreds of reactions: “Why do Romanians go so hard in the city?”
Small penalties and the lack of police
Many participants in the discussion have raised the question in direct connection with its legislation and application.
“That the punishments are not large enough”says a user.
“And that the police are missing“Adds another.
“This combination is needed. A, and the police to be incorruptible“, Is one of the recommendations.
Others go further and draw attention to the fact that the legislation exists, but the application is almost non -existent:
“We have legislation, not the best, but it is there. And yet, it does not apply largely because you do not see the policeman in the patrol. I only see those sadness from the local (in the pcs), hidden on their own, after the blocks, playing on the phone …”
Winding fines and radical measures
In the discussion the idea of tougher sanctions appeared frequently:
“Take the huge fines, at least 1000 EUR, the Romanians become Germans.”
“The fines correlated with the income. Much Better! … It’s quite simple.”
“Minimum 1 million euros, why only 1000? If you do them 1000 you only do that legal thing for the rich.”
Some even proposed radical measures:
“If you had the car seized for speed over 100 in the locality, no one would risk.”
“Confiscated the car, a salary fine for one year, allowed for many years, many can be. In case of murder, clear prison.”
Mentality, education and … infrastructure
Another part of the community considers that the problem is one of mentality:
“Exactly, it is actually missing the brain because the difference of time won is very small.”
“When you have no other productive and meaningful hobbies, it excites you when you step on the pedal of a pan on the boulevard.”
“By fools, the smallest IQ in Europe, most dead on the road. ”
“Because the lack of education and low iQ.
A special argument targeted the structure of the roads in the big cities:
“Because the infrastructure (street) urges you to go quickly. Bucharest has boulevards with 2-3 sometimes 4 lanes on the direction that suggests to you at the subconscious level that there is high speed road.
Between the lack of authority and speed as a “refuge”
Finally, the explanations range from the absence of surveillance cameras – “Because there are no rooms in all intersections, if in a maximum month we escaped all the ‘professionals’” – Until the desire to get home faster, even if the benefit is almost null: “To get home to catch the same recycled news every hour.”
A combination between the lack of real sanctions, the road infrastructure that encourages the speed and a poor road culture makes the accelerator pedal in Romania louder than anywhere in the EU.
