“Starting from 2015, we celebrate every year the Day of Romanians Everywhere on the last Sunday of May as a day dedicated to all Romanians, but especially to those who live outside the borders. Wherever we are, let's celebrate this day together, evaluating what has been done, but especially what remains to be done, so that we feel better protected and have more confidence in a Romania that defends our rights and serves our interests” President Klaus Iohannis said.
The head of state said that the Romanian authorities “understand better” how to turn the departure of compatriots to work or study into an opportunity, stating that the experience gained by them is valued through public policies.
“Together we changed the way the state institutions look at those who are far from the country. Now, the authorities understand better how going to work or study abroad can be transformed from a loss for Romania, to an opportunity that should not be wasted. The experience with which our fellow citizens return to the country and the involvement of Romanians in the communities in which they live are today highlighted through dedicated public policies such as: measures aimed at helping the children remaining in the country, defending the rights of seasonal workers in the host countries, to quickly equate diplomas for students or to reintegrate into the labor market those who wish to return to the country“, the president mentioned.
Klaus Iohannis also stated that bridges were promoted for collaborations between Romanians in the country and those in the diaspora.
“We have constantly promoted the creation of professional communities between Romanians in the country and those abroad, creating a closer connection between businessmen, scientific researchers, doctors, teachers and Romanian artists from everywhere, from “here” and “there”, which , working together, they have built many successful projects.
By institutionalizing many such initiatives, diaspora became stronger and acquired a voice that is better heard both in Bucharest and in other capitals of the worldi”, said the head of state.
The President emphasized that the Day of Romanians Everywhere is, at the same time, “an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to unity and solidarity“. ” In an ever-changing world, values such as freedom, dignity and respect remain the pillars on which the global democratic community rests. Let us never forget that we have been able to overcome the difficult challenges of recent years through our ability to stand together. With a war at the borders, we showed emotional empathy to the Ukrainian refugees, to whom we knew how to demonstrate the remarkable solidarity of Romanians towards their neighbors so tried“, added the head of state.
Klaus Iohannis said regarding Romanian culture and traditions, that these “represents a source of pride and inspiration for all those who carry the Romanian spirit in their souls“.
“Regardless of the continent we are on, today we all celebrate our common heritage and the identity that defines us as a people. Wherever they are, Romanians make a valuable contribution to the diversity and cultural richness of the societies in which they live. It is therefore important to preserve our identity, language and traditions and pass them on to future generations. Happy birthday, dear Romanians from everywhere”, concluded the head of state.
