The current Commissioner for Transport, Adina-Ioana Vălean (EPP), is expected to leave her seat in the college to take up her post as an MEP – which will not be a new thing for her as she is more than 10 years in Parliament (holding relevant positions such as vice-president and president of the ENVI and ITRE commissions), writes the publication Politico.

The publication states that although Romania could re-elect her as commissioner, “the chances of a second term at Berlaymont for Vălean seem small“. However, it is said that the Romanian’s experience in the transport sector could play in her favor when political groups assign priority positions and files in the new legislature. At the same time, it is mentioned that the position of president of the TRAN Commission remained vacant after Karima Delli did not run for a new mandate.

In the last five years, Vălean has negotiated sensitive files regarding the road, rail, maritime and aviation sectors. She also had to deal with the single market border closures due to Covid and the war in Ukraine, including establishing avenues of solidarity with the country invaded by Russia. Why not put all this wealth of experience at the service of Parliament?“, the American publication also shows.

Among the other names of MEPs categorized as those who “matter”, there are also:

  1. Céline Imart – “agricultural disruptor”, from the group (PPE), (from France);
  2. Johan Van Overtveldt – “banking influencer”, from the group of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), (from Belgium);
  3. Andreas Schwab – “an influential powerbroker”, from the EPP, (from Germany);
  4. Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann- “defence influencer”, from Renew Europe, (from Germany);
  5. Pascal Canfin – “green pillar”, Renew Europe, (from France);
  6. Stéphanie Yon-Courtin – “financial negotiator”, Renew Europe, (from France);
  7. Vytenis Andriukaitis – “health advocate”, group of Socialists and Democrats, (from Lithuania);
  8. Peter Liese- “soldier of industry”, EPP, (from Germany);
  9. Aura Salla and Dóra Dávid – “Meta magnate”, EPP, (from Finland and Hungary);
  10. Bernd Lange – “the man of the trade agreements”, Socialists and Democrats, (from Germany).

As “Avedărul” reported, on July 15, the European Commissioner for Transport, Adina Vălean, had informed the President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, that she decided to resign from the EC in order to receive her mandate from European Parliament, where she was elected.

Adina Vălean is one of the Romanian MEPs with an extremely extensive experience. She won her first mandate as a European dignitary in 2007, according to the column “Portrait of a candidate” made by recorder.ro.

Although he is now on the list of joint candidates of the PSD – PNL parties, Vălean has not shied away from criticizing the Romanian state in the past. She was part of the team that came up with the famous green certificate and claims that passenger rights legislation is the most important project she has managed as European Transport Commissioner.

The 56-year-old transport commissioner, Vălean, is a mathematics teacher. She completed her studies between 1986 and 1990 at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Bucharest and followed a Master in European Integration and Security Studies between 2005 and 2006 and then completed her studies with an internship at the College of Defense from Bucharest, between 2004 and 2005.
