The Constitutional Court of Romania went into session on Saturday evening to analyze the appeals filed against the candidacies of Marcel Ciolacu, Mircea Geoană and Ludovic Orban in the 2024 presidential elections. The appeals were rejected.

Update 21:38: The candidacies of Mircea Geoană, Marcel Ciolacu and Ludovic Orban were accepted by the Constitutional Court, according to sources cited by Adevărul. The validation took place during a meeting that started at 21.00.
According to Adevărul sources, two of the judges, Livia Stanciu and Simina Tănăsescu, were absent, being on legal leave. The decisions were adopted by 7 of the 9 judges.
“Following the deliberations, the Constitutional Court:
By unanimous vote,
– Rejected the appeal filed by Mr. Talpoș Ioan against the registration of the candidacy of Mr. Mircea – Dan Geoană in the elections for the President of Romania in 2024;
– Rejected, as inadmissible, the appeal filed by Mr. Stan Valerian against the candidacy of Mr. Ludovic Orban in the elections for the President of Romania in 2024;
– Rejected, as inadmissible, the appeal filed by the European Association for Economic Opposition against the candidacy of Mr. Ion-Marcel Ciolacu in the elections for the President of Romania in 2024.”, according to a CCR press release.
“The decisions are final and are communicated to the Central Electoral Bureau. The arguments retained in motivating the solutions pronounced by the Plenary of the Constitutional Court will be presented in the content of the decisions, which will be published in the Official Gazette of Romania, Part I.“, CCR also specified.

In a previous meeting, the CCR decided, with five votes out of seven, to exclude Diana Șoșoăca’s candidacy, thus invalidating all available appeals.
The complaints against Marcel Ciolacu were formulated by the European Association for Economic Opposition, while the PSD leader was targeted by a lot of voices that criticized him. Mircea Geoană faces a challenge filed by Talpoș Ioan, and Ludovic Orban was challenged by Stan Valerian.
The CCR judges postponed the vote on the candidacies of Geoana and Orban until 21:00, after the appeals against Nicolae Ciucă and Kelemen Hunor were rejected.
The Court’s decisions are final and will be communicated to the Central Electoral Office, thus establishing the electoral landscape for the next presidential elections.
