Pediatric doctor Mihai Craiu warns about a deadly disease, widespread in Africa, which is again reported in Europe. It can arrive in Romania through unvaccinated persons, coming from Ukraine.

“The angel of the death of the children returns. It is not a joke or metaphor. It is reality. The diphtheria, nicknamed, returned. The disease considered practically absent from the EU countries hits again. A 10 -year -old boy, previously healthy, but unvaccinated, from Germany, died in Berlin, a few days ago, after he got diphtheria 3 months ago. In Germany they have also died of complications of diphtheria and 2 adults in the last year. Still unvaccinated. And it’s not an isolated accident. In South Africa last year, over 20 infections with the pathogen of diphtheria (Corynebacterium, toxigenic stems) were reported, of which 5 died ”writes Dr. Mihai Craiu, a pediatric primary physician at the Institute for the Health of the Mother and Child “Alessandrescu-Rusescu” in Bucharest, on his Facebook page Virtual Hospital for Children.
Dr. Craiu points out that diphtheria can arrive in Romania through unvaccinated persons, coming from Ukraine. “This is close to us and millions of Ukrainian citizens have passed through our country. A much smaller number of people who fled the War remained here. Just before the pandemic, CNSCBT (National Center for Transmissible Disease Supervision) warned the seven counties from the border with Ukraine that in this area the cases of diphtheria have reappeared. And in Romania there were emotions, but it was false alarm”, Says Dr. Craiu.
As a result, the pediatrician recommends parents to look in the children’s vaccination book.
“Until we say that we escaped it is good to look in the vaccination book of our children. If it is the incomplete scheme for Diftero-Tetano-Perrtussis should be discussed with the family doctor about vaccination recovery. You do not want to know what 50,000 deaths look like in the child !!! For so it was, every year, before the 2nd World War, when there was no DTP vaccine”, Concludes Dr. Mihai Craiu.
