The meeting of the permanent reunited offices of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate was convened on Saturday, February 1, starting at 6.30 pm, in online format. On the agenda, several measures for the adoption of the state budget for 2025 are registered, but also the initiative of the sovereign parties for the suspension of President Klaus Iohannis.

The party of young people (can) filed on January 16 the request to suspend President Klaus Iohannis, supported by 161 parliamentarians. The initiative comes in a context of a political crisis, and the leaders can consider that the president’s mandate has expired, and Romania needs a restoration of democracy.

The approach of the sovereign parties to obtain a vote in the Parliament regarding the suspension of President Klaus Iohannis is likely to reach a distance of less than 15 votes. The procedure, which aims to dismiss the president, would not be fulfilled, but would be an image exercise for the opposition.

In the context of several criticisms, some coming right from within the ruling coalition, President Klaus Iohannis does not take into account the resignation and will remain at the Cotroceni Palace until the oath was taken by the new president. The head of state has clarified that he will fulfill his mandate until he is replaced by the new chosen of the people.

The choice regarding the completion of the mandate has heard both voices among party members and leaders. The head of the Hungarian Democratic Union, Kelemen Hunor, said it would be better for the coalition if there was a resignation, but stressed that he would not support the initiative of the sovereign parties.

USR, an opposition party, has announced that it will support the approach. However, to pass, the initiative needs votes.
