The head of the DSU was actively involved in organizing the Seism Exercise 2025, organized between June 21-25, by which the vulnerabilities of Romania were identified in the case of a devastating earthquake, such as the one of 1977.
Arafat explained that the exercise aimed at preparing for a large number of victims, the estimation of the scenario being 20,000 victims, of which 4,000 deaths, in the context of a possible 7.3 earthquake on Richter.
The evacuation of a sanitary unit in such a context could take between 8 and 12 hours, according to some estimates, due to several elements, such as the condition of the hospitalized patients and the number of forces that can be physically engaged in their evacuation.
“We know for sure that, if we have a major earthquake in Bucharest and the buildings are not consolidated (…), that we will have a large number of victims, this is clear, we are preparing in this direction”, explained Raed Arafat, according to news.ro.
“The number of victims was calculated by our colleagues estimated, but it does not mean that this will happen.
