The investigation into the outbreak of Candida Auris infection discovered at the Center of Serious Arcii within the Floreasca Hospital reveals serious practices of hiding infections and numerous deficiencies in the management of cases. In this context, the quarantine of the center was instituted, which no longer hospitalizes, and the authorities applied harsh sanctions.
The case of the 37 -year -old patient who was transferred to Belgium, after being initially admitted to the Floreasca Hospital, has revealed an extremely serious situation regarding how the infections associated with the medical act were managed.
The woman, who suffered burns on 70% of the body surface and was admitted on June 1, was diagnosed with Candida Auris infection after 18 days of hospitalization, which leads to the idea that she contracted the fungus in the hospital. However, the bacteriological information and the diagnosis of nosocomial infections were not inscribed in the medical observation sheet, according to Digi24 sources.
Although the official documents did not reflect, therefore, the real condition of the patient, she received the necessary antibiotic treatments, which raises serious question marks on the transparency and correctness of the medical act within the ARSI Center.
“Cocktail” of bacteria
During the hospitalization, several aggressive bacteria were detected in the patient’s wound.
Thus, on June 7, Pseudomonas aeruginosa was detected, a bacterium commonly associated with nosocomial infections, which can aggravate the condition of severely burnt patients. The next few days brought other resistant bacteria in the intestinal flora, and on June 18, the infection with Candida Auris, an extremely contagious and treatments resistant.
However, the information regarding the insraspital infections were not included in the medical observation sheet, which suggests a possible attempt to hide serious problems.
Proof that the medical staff knew about them, the patient was treated with antibiotics, and to prevent the spread of infection, was isolated in a special reserve, both in Romania and after transfer to Belgium, where he arrived for additional care at his family’s insistence.
Candida Auris is extremely contagious
Candida Auris is an extremely dangerous fungus, with a high spread capacity in hospitals, including from one patient to another in just a few hours.
The National Institute of Public Health and Medical Expert warns that this fungus can cause serious epidemic outbreaks, the most eloquent example being Italy in 2020, when over 200 patients in eight hospitals were infected.
At Floreasca Hospital, the tests were initially performed only in patients admitted to the intensive care of the Center of Arms, but the samples may be extended to other sections.
After discharging the infected patients, the salons will be closed and undergoing rigorous disinfection to prevent the spread of this bacterium.
Disinfection made with unauthorized products
The Ministry of Health has reported an extremely serious problem related to the use of unauthorized biocidal products in the European Union for the disinfection of spaces in Floreasca Hospital, and the situation raises question marks on how the purchases were made and who is responsible for authorizing and controlling the quality of these products.
The internal investigation is trying to establish the details regarding the origin and the purchase of these biocides, which involve several official signatures, including that of the hospital manager.
Medical staff, upset the patient who asked for transfer to Belgium
The medical staff in the Center of Arcii was unhappy and tense about the transfer of the patient to Belgium. This was even criticized by some members of the medical team who told him to be ashamed for the gesture.
Initially, the patient’s sister requested the transfer of Eiacestia to another hospital in the European Union, a request that was initially refused, on the grounds that the center has all the necessary conditions for treatment.
It is also worth mentioning that the actual transfer was possible only after the family managed to raise the necessary money from private donations, the expenses with admission to Belgium not being covered by the Romanian state.
Quarantine and fines
As a result of the discovery of the outbreak of Candida Auris, the Ministry of Health instituted quarantine at the Floreasca Center and suspended the hospitalizations. Following the controls of the Control Body of the Minister and the State Sanitary Inspection, fines were applied totaling 60,000 lei to both the hospital and the cleaning company that serves the Center.
The sanctions aimed at:
* 10,000 lei fine for non -observance of the sanitation and disinfection procedures by the cleaning company;
* 20,000 lei fine for the use of biocides without authorization;
* 30,000 lei fine for the lack of ventilation in accordance with the burns.
Also, the Minister of Health, Alexandru Rogobete, publicly asked the resignation of the head of the Center of Arms Seriously at Floreasca Hospital, accusing him of “crashed irresponsibility and carelessness, and criticized his attitude, considering that “Arrogance and indolence are incompatible with professional dignity”, especially in the context in which the head of the center has extended its leave during the investigation.
In parallel, the College of Physicians in Romania has opened its own professional investigation to analyze the therapeutic and medical behavior of the staff involved in the treatment of infected patients.
