Cioroianu: Nicușor Dan had to respect the institution of the President of Romania and to participate in the funerals of Ion Iliescu

Adrian Cioroianu believes that President Nicușor Dan was wrong lacking the burial of former president Ion Iliescu. He stressed that the respect was directed to the presidential institution, not necessarily to Iliescu’s person.

At the same time, Cioroianu claims that Klaus Iohannis should have participated, criticizing the political decision of the USR not to take part in the funeral.

They won the parties during the funeral of Ion Iliescu

“In the end, every party does what he wants. I think it’s a mistake, but if they have done a calculation and have won something, it’s their job. If they are consistent with their electorate, it’s fine. Instead, I think President Nicușor Dan had to come. Because he was respecting the institution. said Cioroianu, quoted by Mediafax.

He added that former President Klaus Iohannis should have participated.

The former Foreign Minister stressed that Ion Iliescu was freely elected and was not convicted or fallen from rights.

“You do not show respect for the individual that Ion Iliescu calls in the bulletin, but to a man who was the President of Romania, through free elections, who had not been convicted, not became closed, no one became fallen by the rights, or if in these conditions, you respect the institution.”said Cioroianu, according to the quoted source.

Ion Iliescu led Romania in three mandates, becoming the first and only president chosen right from the first round of free elections. However, the number of those who came to pay a last tribute was much smaller, and absenteeism was also noted in the presidential institution of the state. Two holders of the highest function in the state chose not to participate in the funerals.
