The scandal related to the elections for the Capital City Hall is amplified. The government was sued because it did not organize the election within the legal term of 90 days since the vacation of the job. While the law still allows the election organization in December, the parties reject this variant and are preparing for a spring vote.

According to the legislation, the Government must issue the decision to organize the election at least 75 days before the date of the vote. The deadline for elections in November passed this week, after the Executive did not adopt the necessary decision, although USR and even PNL supported this variant. Thus, the government was sued because it did not organize the election within the legal term, according to Antena 3 CNN.
Legally, the only option would be December, but the parties categorically reject the idea. “December with winter holidays, is not suitable for campaign“, Is the general position. Most likely, the vote will be moved in the spring, as they wanted social democrats.
The situation is not unprecedented. In the past, Ludovic Orban sued the government led by Nicolae Ciuca because he had not organized elections in 57 localities.
Candidate race and threat with coalition breakage
The postponement of the election opens another fight, the one for the designation of the candidates. The negotiations of the coming months are announced tense and could even lead to the coalition. PSD clearly said that if PNL and USR have a common candidate, the coalition will break.
Social Democrats would prefer a common candidate of coalition, but they do not exclude the option for each party to go separately.
In the PSD there are two variants for Bucharest: Gabriela Firea and Daniel Băluță. At PNL, the internal competition is close, with the name of Ciprian Ciucu, Stelian Bujduveanu and Sebastian Burduja in the foreground. At the USR, the most conveyed candidate is Cătălin Drulă.
