The meeting convened by the President of Romania with the leaders of the PSD, PNL, USR, UDMR and the minorities takes place against the backdrop of tensions in the Government, which arose after the CCR rejected the special pension reform project. Political leaders differed on the direction of a new initiative, under pressure from the tight deadline imposed by the PNRR for the adoption of a compliant reform.
Romania risks losing over 200 million euros if it does not meet the milestone related to the reform of magistrates’ pensions by November 28.
The CCR rejected the project for which the Government assumed responsibility in Parliament, arguing that it did not have the CSM’s approval.
The Court points out that the request “could be done only after the completion of the interministerial approval procedure” and that the Government had to wait 30 days for the issuance of the opinion from the magistrates. “The fact that the Government decided to undertake its responsibility, according to art. 114 para. (1) of the Constitution, on the mentioned draft law does not justify the circumvention, shortening, implicit modification of the term“, emphasizes CCR.
