Local police officers could receive new duties in traffic, according to a draft law launched in public debate by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI). The document stipulates that local police officers will have the right to stop vehicles, ask for drivers’ and car’s documents, apply fines and even order the removal of illegally parked cars.

According to the project, the local police will be able to request the driver’s license, the registration certificate, the RCA insurance, as well as the documents of origin for the transported goods. Drivers are obliged to present all the required documents, otherwise they risk fines ranging from 6 to 8 points – that is, up to 1,600 lei.
Local police officers will also have the possibility to sanction drivers who stop or park irregularly, but also pedestrians, cyclists, users of electric scooters or pushcarts who do not respect traffic rules. They can also intervene in cases of physical or verbal aggression between traffic participants.
Currently, the local police’s powers in the traffic field are limited, and they are only allowed to stop vehicles in specific situations. The MAI project would significantly expand these powers.
The document is under public debate, and after final approval it will be published in the Official Gazette.
