Australian Open 2026 has started. When the only Romanian woman present in the qualifications enters the competition

The Australian Open 2026 kicked off on Sunday night with matches from the first round of qualifications, both in the women’s and men’s draws. The games on the main draw are scheduled from January 18.

The first Grand Slam tournament of the year, which will end on February 1, has record prizes. The simple presence in the qualifications brings each athlete a profit of 23,000 euros.

One win in 2026

Non-existent in men’s, Romania has three girls on the main draw (Jaqueline Cristian, Sorana Cîrstea and Gabriela Rusa) and one in the qualifications.

It is about Miriam Bulgaru (27 years old, 197 WTA), who will fight tomorrow morning, from 4:00 am, with the German Tamara Korpatsch (30 years old, 124 WTA). The German is the 14th favorite in the qualifications.

Bulgaru comes to the game after two matches in his legs, both contested in the qualifiers for the challenger from Canberra.

He won the game on January 4, against Australia’s Alame (unranked), and lost the next day to Slovakia’s Zidansek.

In order to enter the main draw in Melbourne, each player must make it through three preliminary rounds.
