The famous director Quentin Tarantino has launched a new attack on the American film industry, which he describes as a “tasteless sausage factory”, full of mediocre productions, poorly cast actors and films that no longer manage to captivate him.
In an article published in Sight and Sound magazine, the filmmaker confessed that it is increasingly difficult for him to watch recent productions without being tempted to criticize them, notes The Independent.
“Flaws, implausibility, audience pandering, miscast performers, or just plain stupid usually torpedo every new movie that comes out of the tasteless sausage factory that was Hollywood,” the director wrote.
“Films from the last six years make the 80s feel like the 30s”
The author of cult films such as “Pulp Fiction”, “Kill Bill” or “Django Unchained” claims that the productions that have appeared in recent years have contributed to the degradation of the cinematographic experience.
“Nowadays, the whole concept of what a movie is is more inclined to inspire me with scorn than generosity. Which is fair, because by comparison the movies of the last six years make the 80s seem like the 30s“, said Tarantino.
The director says that he no longer finds in current cinema the sense of fascination that made him fall in love with this art.
“But nothing that really captivated me and captured me in the magical realm of pleasure that I visited regularly and that was why I loved movies more than any other art form”he added.
His conclusion is categorical:
“These days I’d rather read a book.”
Which films impressed Tarantino though
Despite the harsh criticism of contemporary Hollywood, the filmmaker also found some productions that caught his attention.
Among them is the film “West Side Story” from 2021, directed by Steven Spielberg, but also the first two chapters of the production “Horizon: An American Saga”directed by Kevin Costner and released in 2024.
Tarantino also had words of praise for “The Rip,” a crime thriller produced by Netflix and directed by Joe Carnahan, starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
“A new suspenseful film has come out that captivated me and held me in my arms throughout its duration”the director wrote.
He appreciated both the premise of the production and the way the story is constructed.
“The film is a gripping crime thriller with an innovative premise that manages to deliver in really clever ways”explained Tarantino.
What ‘The Rip’ Is About
The film follows the story of members of a Miami police unit, played by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, whose trusting relationship begins to unravel after the discovery of millions of dollars hidden in an abandoned location.
Quentin Tarantino’s comments come at a time when the debate over the current state of Hollywood is intensifying, with many directors and critics accusing the industry of emphasizing franchises, remakes and commercial productions at the expense of originality and artistic quality.
