The minimum wage in the economy is increasing: how much will Romanians receive from July 1 and how many employees are targeted by the increase

Starting from Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the minimum gross basic salary per country guaranteed in payment was increased from 4,050 lei to 4,325 lei per month, according to Government Decision no. 146 of March 12, 2026. The increase represents an advance of 6.8%, respectively 275 lei in gross value.

According to the normative act, the new minimum wage is established without including increments and other additions, being calculated for a normal work schedule of 166,667 hours per month, which corresponds to an hourly rate of 25,949 lei.

The minimum salary reaches approximately 2,699 lei, after applying the deduction of 200 lei. The actual increase in the hand is estimated at around 125 lei.

Data from the Ministry of Labor show that, in March 2026, more than 831,000 employees were paid the minimum gross salary guaranteed in payment. Officials estimate, however, that the measure will have a much wider impact, targeting approximately 1.76 million employees in Romania.

The government also adopted, in April 2026, an emergency ordinance by which the minimum wage in the agricultural sector and the food industry is correlated with the level of the minimum wage in the economy.

The executive argued that the measure was necessary in the context where the minimum wage in agriculture and the food industry was previously 4,050 lei, lower than the new general level established at 4,325 lei.

Also, starting July 1, the amount of traffic fines will increase with the increase of the fine point to 216.25 lei, the equivalent of 5% of the minimum gross salary per country. The new values ​​will affect all classes of penalties provided for by the Highway Code, and for some of the most serious violations, drivers risk fines of up to 4,325 lei and the suspension of their driver’s license.
