More and more people are having “whole body” MRIs, even though doctors warn of the risks. The investigation is also available in Romania

Heavily promoted on social media as a method for early detection of cancer and other diseases, whole-body MRI is gaining ground among asymptomatic people. Although it promises the early detection of hundreds of diseases and is already available in private clinics in Romania, specialists warn that its benefits are often overestimated. Beyond the high costs, elective scans frequently generate false positives, unwarranted anxiety and unnecessary medical interventions.

The illusion of total control

Interest in whole-body investigations is fueled by people’s natural desire to prevent disease. In the United States, more and more people are choosing to do such investigations on their own initiative, even if they have no symptoms, amid promotion by social media influencers, as they promise to identify cancer at stage one and convey the idea that any healthy person should know in detail what is happening in their body.

The representatives of the clinics that offer these services admit, however, that unclear results are the order of the day. Dan Durand, the medical director of the American company Prenuvo, explained to ABC7 that about one in five patients receives a recommendation for additional tests following such an MRI.

This is where the fundamental problem arises: the fact that a scan identifies an abnormality does not automatically mean that the patient has a dangerous condition. Radiologist Robert Krasny points out that the main risk of these investigations is the discovery of benign, completely harmless changes. “The classic downside is finding something that turns out to be nothing”he explains.

A systematic review of studies in asymptomatic patients confirms this, highlighting a high rate of false positive results and a lack of data demonstrating a real long-term clinical benefit.

Overdiagnosis: when more information does not equal health

Doctors do not dispute the value of classic screenings (such as mammography or colonoscopy), but they draw attention to the fact that not all conditions, including cancers, have the same evolution. Some tumors grow so slowly that they will not cause symptoms.

This phenomenon is called overdiagnosis. The discovery of such a condition triggers a chain of monitoring, biopsies or even surgical interventions that come with their own complications. Krasny recalls a large study of ovarian cancer screening, where investigations did not reduce mortality, but instead sent more than 1,000 healthy women to the operating table for completely unnecessary interventions.

For these reasons, major professional associations, including the American College of Radiology (ACR), do not recommend whole-body MRI scans for people without symptoms or a family history of risk. Furthermore, a “normal” result can provide a false sense of security, causing patients to skip scientifically validated routine examinations.

In Romania, the “whole body” MRI was introduced by the large private health networks and can be performed on request, often without medical referral, being promoted as a general screening tool.

The decision to perform an MRI of the whole body should not be made under the impulse of Internet trends, but only after a detailed discussion with the attending physician, draw the attention of the specialists. In the absence of clear symptoms, the price for “peace of mind” is often paid in months of anxiety and unnecessary invasive procedures.
