The government meets on Friday, August 7, in an extraordinary meeting to establish the rules for applying the measures to reduce electricity consumption in the case of large industrial consumers, against the backdrop of increasing pressure on the national energy system.
The decision comes after the Interim Executive adopted a normative act that allows the limitation or staged disconnection of large industrial consumers in energy crisis situations.
The authorities have already put the state of alert in the energy sector and say that the main priority is to maintain the supply of energy for the population and for essential services, in the context of the production deficit and high consumption.
“We adopted a decision that approves the risk preparation plans, it is a general plan that takes into account several risks, from earthquakes, to wars, pandemics, including the one we have today, the drought. This general plan provides for the measures that are applied in such situations. (…) This means that we will form a national operative center in the energy sector, and I will sign an order this afternoon. This operative center includes representatives of the main producers and suppliers of energy in Romania, around 15 representatives”announced Ilie Bolojan, Thursday afternoon, at the end of the Government meeting.
The interim prime minister assured that the possible measures to restrict consumption will not affect households.
“Personal residences, citizens, will not be limited or disconnected. So domestic consumers are exempt from these measures. Also, consumers whose activity cannot be interrupted, such as hospitals, sanatoriums or other activities that cannot be interrupted, stations that supply gas units, crude oil and so on, will not be included in this regulation”. he declared.
Asked if Romania faces the risk of a blackout, interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan rejected this scenario, stressing that the measures prepared by the Government are exclusively preventive in nature. “We are not in the situation you described“, he said.
The intervention plan is aimed exclusively at large industrial consumers and would be applied gradually, only if the situation in the energy system deteriorates. The government is to establish in Friday’s meeting the criteria and procedures by which these measures will be implemented.
The restrictions are analyzed in the context of the risks generated by reduced energy production and difficult hydrological conditions, which put pressure on the operation of important capacities in the national energy system.
