A popular beach in Greece offers tourists an unusual experience: the water seems to boil in certain areas, and those who enter the sea can swim among thousands of bubbles. However, the phenomenon has a geological explanation and is linked to the volcanic activity in the region.
It is about Paradise Beach, also known by tourists as “Bubble Beach”located on the island of Kos, in the Kefalos gulf area, approximately 35 kilometers from Kos town.
A few meters from the shore, volcanic gases emerge from the seabed and continuously form bubbles in the water. The phenomenon creates the feeling of a “natural jacuzzi” and has turned this area into one of the unusual attractions of the island.
Where do the bubbles come from?
The phenomenon is mainly caused by carbon dioxide and other volcanic gases that are released from the subsoil and reach the surface through the seabed.
Kos is an island of volcanic origin and is part of the Aegean Volcanic Arc, a chain of volcanic centers in the Aegean Sea. The island’s geothermal activity is also linked to the volcano on the nearby island of Nisyros.
Although the water in the bubble zone is not hot, at certain points the seabed can be slightly warm to the touch. Unlike other geothermal areas, the gases released here do not produce a noticeable smell.
The place where the bubbles appear is usually indicated by a buoy or an inflatable object placed in the water so that tourists can easily identify it.
A popular beach with families
Paradise Beach is appreciated not only for the geological phenomenon, but also for the conditions offered to tourists. The beach has fine, golden sand and the water is clear, turquoise and remains shallow for a considerable distance from shore.
The area is equipped with deckchairs and umbrellas, and tourists have bars and restaurants at their disposal. Numerous water activities are also available, including jet skiing and jet skiing, parasailing.
The volcanic origin of the island means that such phenomena are found in several areas of Kos. The last major and explosive eruption of the island occurred about 160,000 years ago, but geothermal activity continues to be present through hot springs and areas where gases reach the surface.
