The American publication Newsweek has removed from its website an opinion piece entitled “The US should defend democracy and Calin Georgescu in Romania” (The United States should defend democracy and Călin Georgescu in Romania), without so far providing a public explanation for this decision.
The text about the former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu was published under the signature of Dennis Portman, a so-called author presented as a specialist in the field of human rights, and was published in the opinion section of the magazine.
According to Newsweek’s editorial, the article represented solely the view of the author and not the official position of the publication.
The text has disappeared from the website of the American publication Newsweek, but it can still be read on the MSN platform: The US should defend democracy – and Calin Georgescu – in Romania | Opinion.
Accessing the former Newsweek article link now redirects users to the publication’s home page, according to Gândul.
The author claimed that the US has a direct interest in defending democracy in Romania
In the article on how “The United States should defend democracy and Călin Georgescu in Romania” it was argued that the USA had an important role in the development of democratic institutions in Romania and in the country’s integration into NATO.
“The United States is not a spectator. Washington has supported Romania’s democratic transition, supported its NATO membership, and developed a strategic partnership that makes it important to American policy in the Black Sea and on NATO’s eastern flank. Stability, sovereignty, and democratic legitimacy are not peripheral concerns for the United States.” wrote the author.
The author of the text states that the relations between the allies must be based on the citizens’ trust in the electoral process:
“A lasting alliance requires public trust that elections are governed by rules rather than geopolitical preferences.”
References to the annulment of the elections and the Călin Georgescu case
The author believed that decisions related to annulment of elections and allegations of external influences should be clearly explained to the public:
“Allegations involving the intelligence services require careful analysis, clear legal standards and procedures that citizens can understand. Romania should not accept a lower standard because it is strategically important.”
In the same text, the Romanian democracy was described as a “young” one, the author warning about the effects that the lack of trust in the electoral process can have on public opinion.
“Romanian democracy is young. The communist regime fell in 1989, and many Romanians keep personal or family memories of a state where secret information, unquestionable authority and political exclusion were instruments of control”.

The author added that canceling the election should not automatically be seen as a means of reducing Russian influence.

Newsweek has not offered a public explanation for the removal of the opinion piece from its platform.
