Oracle is preparing another round of layoffs in August after the company already cut about 21,000 jobs globally by the end of May.
In Romania, the American company let go of about 500 employees in June, out of a total of about 4,000 people. The new round of layoffs could also affect other teams in Romania, but the exact extent of the measures is not known for now.
According to an internal document seen by Business Insider, the new plan aims to reduce payroll expenses by September 1. In some departments, staff cuts could reach double-digit percentages.
Oracle managers are said to have already been instructed to draw up lists of employees to be laid off.
The company did not comment on the information regarding the new wave of layoffs.
Oracle currently has around 141,000 employees worldwide, but the company is facing significant financial pressure amid massive investments in the infrastructure needed to develop artificial intelligence services.
The American giant invested $55.7 billion in infrastructure and data centers in the fiscal year ended May 31. The amount is about $23.7 billion higher than the company’s revenue in the same period.
To finance these investments, Oracle resorted to massive borrowing. The company raised about $43 billion in loans in the last fiscal year and another $5 billion in stock sales.
For the current fiscal year, Oracle expects to raise about $40 billion more through a combination of borrowing and issuing shares.
The investments are intended in particular to expand the infrastructure of artificial intelligence, including the construction of data centers and the purchase of chips necessary for the development of this technology.
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is forcing big tech companies to strike a balance between the huge investments required and investor pressure for profits.
In Oracle’s case, the downsizing comes alongside unprecedented infrastructure investment. The company is thus trying to keep costs under control at a time when the demand for artificial intelligence services is driving investments of tens of billions of dollars.
