With the transformation of Sibiu into the European Capital of Culture, in 2007, the city opened its doors to the world in a way that even the authorities did not suspect, although they hoped.

Since then, Sibiu has developed progressively, turning into one of the most popular cities in Romania, always being in the preferences of foreigners and, often, in recent years, in the international tourism charts.
It is certain that the culture and tourism strategies, even if they can be perfected, are quite well developed, year after year, being two components closely related to each other, thanks to which the fame of Sibiu was taken abroad, in addition to the archaeological and historical treasures of the medieval fortress in the heart of Transylvania.
However, less is known about the incredible opportunities for spending free time in nature, in the surroundings of Sibiu, the county being extremely well-situated from this point of view as well. And we're not just referring to the horse-drawn carriage rides on the Hârtibaciului Valley, the Zânelor Valley, or the Avrigului, Păltiniș, Mărginimea Sibiului or other areas, but the hiking trails developed through an extremely ambitious project.
Practically every weekend, locals and tourists have the opportunity to choose how to spend time in an organized setting, through guided tours (SEE PHOTO GALLERY), enjoying the air and the generous nature. In this sense, a platform has been created where a varied range of events organized in this sense are posted, thanks to the “Years of Trekking” program.

From the FITS International Theater Festival to the Sibiu International Marathon
More is known about the cultural life of Sibiu thanks to the largest open-air museum – the Astra Museum in Dumbrava Sibiu and the events it hosts permanently, or the oldest museum in the country – the Brukenthal Museum and its amazing exhibitions , of the magical Christmas Market, of the renowned FITS International Theater Festival – the first major festival in Central and Eastern Europe, one of the largest festivals in the world and the largest event dedicated to the performing arts in Romania, of the Transilvania International Film Festival TIFF, has countless events dedicated to traditions, folklore, jazz, gastronomy, etc.
And the sports component is well developed – for example, the Sibiu International Marathon has been taking place here for more than a decade, but Rally Challenge and Red Bull Romaniacs are also of great interest. The city also boasts tens of kilometers of cycling tracks. The mentioned events represent only a part of the activities that Sibiu is proud of every year. And we are not only referring to the medieval fortress, but to many other areas in the county, part of these events.
Hiking, trekking, equestrian tourism, horse riding, observing flora or fauna
As part of the tourism promotion strategy in Sibiucet County, in 2021 the public administration in collaboration with the County Tourism Association launched a new program “Years of Hiking” that would quickly enjoy great interest. The initiative appeared in the context of the pandemic and the need for people to go out in nature, to appreciate simple things like a walk in the open air.
And the opportunity to capitalize on the natural heritage of the county, determined county investments in the restoration and improvement of the existing tourist hiking infrastructure and the promotion in a common platform of activities specific to ecotourism.
Practically, from small to large, with class or family, with friends or strangers, those who wish have the opportunity, thanks to this program, to choose the way they want, depending on the level of difficulty, to spend their free time in nature, taking leisure walks in scenic mountain areas, through forests or on hills.
And the range of offers is extremely diverse: from hiking for beginners or those with average physical condition, to trekking for the experienced, cultural and traditional tours, cycle tourism, horse riding, bird or flora watching, ski touring, equestrian tourism, “baths of the forest”, yoga, gastronomy with tasting of local products or picnics taken to heights, with stops along the route at touristic, cultural, historical or natural objectives.
“For nature and adventure lovers, this is the perfect time”
And every month various routes, events, activities and opportunities in nature are proposed throughout Sibiu county, perfect for one or more days of total disconnection from the city.
For example, in April 2024, hikes have already been made to pick leurda or other edible plants, but also to admire brambles or to taste bulz, to admire the free Arabian horses or picnics and visits to animal farms. And until the end of the month, hikes will be organized in the Făgăraş or Cindrel Mountains, on the seven hills of Ighiş, to the Hobbit House or to the Ilimbav ponies, all accompanied by certified tourist guides.
“For nature and adventure lovers, this is the perfect time to embark on a trek through the mountains. On the green paths, under clear and sunlit skies, every step reveals new spectacular views and moments of deep contemplation. Whether you're climbing high peaks or strolling past refreshing waterfalls, enjoy every moment of your hike. Leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind and embark on a journey to the peace and beauty of nature. Check out the hiking schedule… and plan your outdoor adventure ahead of time!”sounds the invitation addressed by the organizers to all tourists, regardless of age, physical condition, social category or nationality.
All these and many others make Sibiu a city and a county extremely appreciated and sought after by tourists from all over the world and are the reason why many choose not only to visit these places in the country, but also to settle temporarily or permanently here.
