The National Museum of Romanian Literature is hosting the anniversary exhibition “30 years of the press”, signed by Vali Ivan, one of the most famous and appreciated Romanian cartoonists.
Vali Ivan is among the best-known Romanian cartoonists
Vali Ivan's exhibition at the National Museum of Romanian Literature can be visited between 8 and 21 May 2024, from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10.00 and 18.00.
Vali Ivan is one of the most prolific and influential Romanian cartoonists, with an impressive career spanning three decades. A graduate of the Bucharest Polytechnic Institute, Faculty of Mechanics, Vali Ivan dedicated his talent and passion to bringing to the attention of the public, through drawing, sometimes harshly, but always with humor, significant aspects of everyday reality.
The exhibition presents a remarkable selection from his rich collection of works – caricatures of the most important Romanian politicians, humorous comics, editorial caricatures, front page illustrations. With more than 15,000 caricatures made during his career, Vali Ivan became a veritable chronicler of the post-December era, capturing political, economic and social topics with acuity and humor.
“The journalistic cartoon is, in fact, an editorial, not written, but drawn, which allows more freedom of expression. In caricature you can exaggerate, you can satirize, in order to convey a clear and strong message, but you must present the event correctly from a journalistic point of view. That's why I've always considered myself a journalist, a journalist who expresses his opinions through images”, the author stated.

Among the important moments in his career are his debut in “Evenimentul Zilei” in 1994, collaborations with “România Liberă”, “Adevărul”, “Adevărul Economic”, “Jurnalul Nationalţional” and many others, as well as his contributions to magazines such as “TV mania” and “New Money”.
“In 1994, there weren't many caricatures of characters in the press, and I came up with the idea of doing some such works, which I presented to the editorial office Event of the Day, newspaper for two years established. I couldn't get past the porter, but he told me to leave the works there because he would pass them on. The next day, Dan Andronic, who was the editor-in-chief, called me and told me that Ion Cristoiu wanted to hire me. That's how I ended up in the media, a world that attracted me like a magnet”, Vali Ivan also said.
