Ciolacu, message on World Press Day: Freedom of expression, a guarantee of a democratic and free society

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu emphasized, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the importance of freedom of expression freedom of expression, “as a lever to inform the public and a guarantee of a democratic and free society”.

“The World Press Freedom Day, which we mark on the third day of May, every year, underlines the importance that we must constantly give to freedom of expression, as a lever for informing the public and a guarantee of a democratic society and free People want to keep up with the latest information, especially in times when collective unity can make a difference, such as the pandemic, security conflicts and their effects”Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu sent on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.

The Prime Minister also showed that, “against the background of the diversification of communication channels in the online environment and in a society increasingly divided by the phenomenon of fake news and disinformation, people in the media have an even more difficult mission, with ever greater responsibilities”.

“At the level of Romanian society, we have a firm partner on the side of truth in the mass media. The activity of a journalist, with all its valences, also has in itself a role of training society. I appreciate the work of these people, with all the complexity it entails, in reflecting government actions and measures”the prime minister also sent.

According to the Head of Government, “contact with the issues that concern citizens and our efforts at the institutional level in the direction of increasing transparency in public administration, important missions assumed by the Government of Romania, can only be supported by equidistant, responsible and good faith information of the public, with the support mass media”.

“World Press Freedom Day is dedicated this year to the importance of the press and freedom of expression in raising awareness of the dangers of climate change, a phenomenon that we see affecting us more and more, on a large scale, but on which we have the power to combat through our correct information, and the press plays a very important role in this regard. Regardless of the nature of the subjects that journalists cover, their effort remains at the service of citizens and the good of society in general. I wish all journalists, all media representatives, to exercise their profession in good faith and always find the way to bring the right information to people's homes.
