“By Decree-Law no. 204 of May 7, 1990, the Special Guard and Protocol Unit was established, a structure in the composition of the 30th Guards Brigade, subordinated to the Ministry of National Defense. A new milestone appeared in the institutional construction of Romania, after the Revolution of December 1989, the precursor of the Protection and Security Service, which would later benefit, in 1991, from its own law. Therefore, for 34 years, one of the pillars of Romanian democracy ensures the normality of civil society”, the former president wrote on his personal page.
Ion Iliescu also showed that “The Protection and Guard Service has a fundamental role in guaranteeing the national security of democracy and fulfills this task through a Western and European institutional morphology”, and “the anniversary of the SPP involves the celebration of a tradition in military education and performance, but also a spirit modern Romania, which is not inferior to other EU states in terms of defense system standards”.
“I remind, on this occasion, that civil order and peace are the result of a coordinated effort of the internal and external missions of the SPP, together with other institutions of equal dignity, behind which stand dedicated professionals, people who beyond personal sacrifices, imposed by career excellence in this field, work for our social and civil balance. I thank the SPP employees, former and current, for their contribution to the construction of Romanian democracy. I hope that this institutional relationship of trust between SPP and Romania will add many more years to the 34 we celebrate today. Happy Birthday, SPP!”former president Ion Iliescu also sent.
