The Minister of Health, Alexandru Rafila, declared on Thursday evening, on Digi 24, that there is no way to talk about an infection of the actor Florin Piersic during the medical procedures.

“It is not about an infection acquired in the hospitals that Mr. Florin Piersic went through in the last month, neither the two in Cluj, nor the two in Bucharest, because the infection was pre-existing, and the procedures that were applied, respectively in Cluj – a washing of this knee prosthesis and the subsequent extraction at the Cluj Heart Institute of that cardiac pacemaker, which was infected, did nothing but try to remove the infection, we cannot in any way discuss an infection of the patient in the course of medical procedures”, said Rafila, quoted by Agerpres.
“He is stable at the moment of the end of the operation”
The minister thanked the medical personnel from the “Matei Balş” Institute and the Foisor Orthopedic Hospital, who took care of the patient.
“We made sure that, from the very first moments, there was a multidisciplinary medical team, which would ensure the best therapeutic behavior for this patient, we are talking about an infectious disease specialist, an orthopedist, a cardiologist, because there are also some heart problems there, and specialists in anesthesia and intensive care. This is important, and as far as I know, the surgery was successfully completed about an hour ago. We will see the evolution of the patient, but he is stable at the moment of the end of the operation and we hope that things will evolve favorably in the next period. So no connection with a nosocomial infection, on the contrary“, the minister also said.
“There was no time to wait”
Alexandru Rafila explained that in the case of the actor Florin Piersic it was about “the attempt to eradicate existing infectious foci in the body”.
“With these prostheses, whether we are discussing the knee prosthesis or the cardiac stimulation device, it happens that when there is a bacteremia, that is, the transient presence of some bacteria in the blood, when they encounter such devices inside the body, they colonize them, and later to form something that we call a bio-film, from where bacteria are periodically released and the local infectious process amplifies, but also with general resonance. This is exactly what happened, and this surgical intervention that the colleagues from the Foişor Hospital performed was probably the most appropriate and there was no time left to wait for, I know, the possible return of the surgeon who operated on him several years ago years for the implantation of this prosthesis”Rafila explained to Digi24.
He mentioned that on Wednesday morning he saw the actor Florin Piersic, who “he was fully conscious, talking, and his condition was stable“.
“It is important once again, at the moment, that this team, which has already been collaborating for two days in Bucharest, finds and monitors the patient every day and finds the best therapeutic solution so that the evolution is favorable, as we we all want I also saw Mr. Florin Piersic yesterday morning, I stayed with him for 20 minutes, he was perfectly conscious, he was talking, so he was absolutely ok, the condition was stable, but surely these infections were evolving and a decision had to be made from the point of view medical to improve his general condition”Alexandru Rafila also said.
Actor Florin Piersic was operated on Thursday at the “Foisor” Orthopedic Hospital, having his knee prosthesis removed and a temporary one implanted, and he is currently in ATI in a stable condition, the health unit informed.
“Following the investigations carried out at our hospital, considering the serious condition of the patient Florin Piersic, a team composed of orthopedic doctors, ATI, infectious disease specialists and a cardiologist was formed and it was decided to perform emergency surgery. The knee prosthesis was extracted, extensive rehabilitation and the implantation of a temporary spacer type prosthesis, carrying an antibiotic, was performed. Currently, the patient is in the ATI ward, in a stable condition“, transmitted the “Foişor” Hospital, according to Agerpres.
