The method by which more and more Romanians try to save their marriages

Couples therapy has become, in recent years, a habit for many Romanians. According to psychologists, more and more people are turning to this method to save their relationships or marriages.

At the same time, experts say, the number of divorces is increasing, providing an explanation for this worrying aspect.

Couples therapy is extremely beneficial and can be followed by any couple, even if they are not experiencing problems in their daily life. Most of the time, those who call for such meetings are those who have reached a single step of divorce and are looking, on the last hundred meters, to save their relationship. It is no wonder that the number of people seeking couples therapy has increased, because the number of divorces has also increased nationally“, said Andreea Coman, clinical psychologist.

Why do you get divorced?

Psychologists have explained why more and more people are choosing to divorce and revealed that, most of the time, it is young couples.

Young people are the ones who choose to give up on marriage much faster. I have had sessions with people who got divorced eight months after their wedding and who went to couples therapy after the divorce and are now happily married. The reasons why Romanians divorce are numerous. Many young people get married without knowing each other very well, after short relationships. A marriage involves a lot of things and thus they get to know their partner much better, noticing the less pleasant aspects as well. At the same time, we are talking about daily stress, about the pressure a person feels every day. This pressure can lead to misunderstandings in a couple,” explains the psychologist.

Coman exemplifies the fact that many couples separate because one of the spouses does not want a child.

“Although marriage involves this step, it is not difficult to understand that there are people who do not want a child. We are talking about those people, very stressed, who do not think they could face such a challenge“, added the psychologist from Iași.

How beneficial is couples therapy?

Even if Romanians are not yet used to seeking the help of psychologists and do not see this as a necessity, specialists claim that, in recent years, many changes have been observed in people's behavior.

People have started to be more open about this topic, they accept that a person who goes to a psychologist is not crazy. Couples therapy is extremely beneficial. Even if, as its name suggests, it is for two people, with its help, the partners also get to know each other individually. Both people who form a couple come, every time, with emotional baggage, with traumas from childhood, from youth, with shortcomings from past relationships, which they have never discussed or revealed. It is important that the two people, who want to save their relationship, also discover these less pleasant aspects, understand and accept them”, concluded the psychologist Andreea Coman.
