The pop star published a series of photos on Instagram on Monday, May 13.
“I sat on stage for 81 shows looking at my mother's beautiful face and wondering what she must have been thinking as she waved at me from the hospital window“, the related post reads. The star was referring to a moment from his “Celebration” tour, made in honor of his mother.
“I got into the car and closed the door, not knowing that it was the last time I would see her.” the 65-year-old pop star also confessed.
Madonna stated that, as a child, she did not realize the seriousness of her mother's illness.
“No one told me my mother was dying – I just watched her mysteriously fade away and then she disappeared and there was no explanation except that she had gone to sleep, which explains my relationship restless with sleep“, she wrote.
The “Like A Virgin” singer's mother died in 1963 when the pop star was just 5 years old.
In an interview with Time magazine in 1985, Madonna confessed that her mother “she was a very forgiving and angelic person”which “never complained” and tried to protect her children from the harsh reality of her illness.
“He kept on going”
“I also remember knowing that she had been ill with breast cancer for a long time, so she was very weak, but she kept going and doing the things she had to doMadonna told Time.
The death of her mother had a huge impact on the artist, leading to a “mother complex” that made her crave attention, she confessed to Carrie Fisher in a 1991 Rolling Stone interview.
“She's gone, so I turned my need to the world and said, “Okay, I don't have a mother to love me, I'm going to make the world love me.”“, the artist also revealed.
Although it may be uncomfortable for parents to talk to their children about death, such discussions can help the little ones understand the subject better and in a safe space.
Parents should consider their children's age and emotional maturity when approaching the topic, Elizabeth Hicks, co-founder of Parenting Nerd, told Business Insider. It is also best for parents to avoid using euphemisms to describe death. By using terms like “he went to bed“, children can develop anxiety at bedtime, added Hannah Ly, child therapist.
Madonna is also a mother. She has six children, including Lourdes Leon and Rocco Ritchie. She also adopted David and Mercy, as well as twins Stella and Estere – who were born in Malawi.
