Perpetual favorites to win the title in Greece, Panathinaikos had a disastrous run in the playoffs, falling out of the title race altogether with one stage to go. The white-greens have not accumulated any points in the last 3 games, the last one meaning a real humiliation in front of Răzvan Lucescu. Following these underperformances and following a meeting within the club, Fatih Terim was sacked after only six months on the Panathinaikos bench.
“Fatih Terim was dismissed from the bench of Panathinaikos after the mediocre results. The team will be led by Christou Kontis in the disputes with Olympiacos and Aris (the latter in the final of the Greek Cup)”announces sport24.gr.
He tried his best to win the championship
On the other hand, the “Emperor” declared: “Since last December, I and my team have done everything for Panathinaikos, with all our strength, to finish the 2023-24 season in first place and make Panathinaikos fans experience a feeling they have not experienced for 13 years. Last night I met with President Alafouzos and saw that our plans for the 2024-25 season are not lining up. As a result of this meeting, we have decided that we will part ways.
I want to especially thank my friends at Panthinaikos who supported me during the 6 months in Athens, the president Yiannis Alafaouzos, and the staff and I am grateful to the football community who expressed their love and respect for my team and me, at every opportunity. I wish Panathinakos a successful future. I hope to meet on new paths”was Fatih Terim's message on his Instagram page.
Răzvan Lucescu is one step away from an exceptional performance, needing a win on Sunday at rivals Aris Thessaloniki to make PAOK Thessaloniki champions of Greece.
