Former FIFA president Joseph Blatter believes the time has come for football’s world governing body to be headed by a woman for the first time.
In his opinion, one of the most suitable candidates for this position is Lise Klaveness, the current president of the Norwegian Football Federation, DPA notes.
“Lise Klaveness deserves the highest praise. She was the only one who took a clear position and did not share the official message. And at FIFA, the time is right for a woman to take over!”, Blatter wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.
In recent months, Lise Klaveness has established herself as one of the most vocal figures in world football. The former Norwegian international, who currently heads the Norwegian Football Association, stood out for her critical stances towards FIFA management and president Gianni Infantino.
Criticism of FIFA management
This is not Klaveness’s first conflict with Zurich officials. In 2025, she publicly called for Israel’s exclusion from international competitions, citing the war in Gaza, a statement that sparked widespread controversy.
Recently, criticism of Gianni Infantino has intensified after the FIFA president proposed selling part of the commercial rights of the World Cup to private investors in a project valued at billions of dollars. The initiative was met with strong opposition, and after harsh backlash, including threats of a boycott from UEFA, the plan was withdrawn.
The episode further fueled discontent with FIFA’s current leadership. Before the elections for the 2027-2031 mandate, more and more federations, including those of England and Germany, along with UEFA, publicly express their reservations and claim that they have lost confidence in Gianni Infantino, according to Agerpres.
