A new fee for Europeans traveling to the United Kingdom

Starting on Wednesday, March 5, European citizens who want to travel to the United Kingdom will be obliged to obtain an electronic travel authorization (ETA). This measure is part of the British Government of border digitalization and consolidating immigration security.

Europeans who have a valid passport will be able to request ETA from March 5, but this will be necessary to enter the UK starting April 1. The new rule concerns the citizens who so far did not need a visa to visit the United Kingdom, informs EFE, quoted by Agerpres.

For non-European citizens, the obligation to obtain ETA is already in effect from January 8. The authorization costs 10 pounds (about 60 lei) and is valid for two years, allowing multiple entries during this period.

Why was the new system inserted

According to the British Ministry of Interior, the implementation of ETA will contribute to improving the security at the border and will provide the authorities to verify in advance the people entering the country.

“ETA extension worldwide strengthen our commitment to improve security and innovation security.” said Seema Malhotra, Secretary of State for Migration.

How to get Eta

Travelers can request ETA through the UK ETA mobile application, which provides an automatic response in just a few minutes. Those who do not have access to a smartphone can also apply through the official website GOV.uk.

In order to obtain the authorization, the applicants must provide biographical and biometric data, as well as to answer questions about the criminal record. Once approved, ETA is digitally linked to the passport.

Although most applications are processed quickly, the authorities recommend submitting them at least three days before the trip, if additional checks are required.

The British government collaborates with air, maritime and railway operators to ensure an effective transition to this new travel authorization system.
