The personal data of 73 million users of one of the largest telecommunications operators in the US, AT&T, leaked into the shadow segment of the Internet – the darknet. The company itself announced this.
“AT&T launched a thorough investigation with internal and external cybersecurity experts. Our preliminary findings indicate that the dataset that migrated to the dark web contained information dating back to 2019 or earlier. This affected approximately 7.6 million current and approximately 65.4 million former AT&T users“, the operator said in a statement.
The information, including customer names and Social Security numbers, was leaked on the dark web about two weeks ago, but the source of the leak has yet to be discovered. The company said the incident has not yet affected its operations.
AT&T suffered a major outage in February. The US Agency for Cybersecurity and Infrastructure, along with the carrier itself and the Federal Communications Commission, then began investigating its causes.
