On Capri Island, one of the most visited and picturesque tourist destinations in Italy, local authorities have adopted firm measures to protect tourists from aggressive commercial promotion. According to a new order issued by Mayor Paolo Falco, it is forbidden for waiters or sellers to approach tourists on the street with menus, leaflets, brochures or offers of products and services.
The ordinance provides for the prohibition of any form of promotion or commercial intermediation in public spaces, including by seemingly harmless methods, such as displaying maps or distributing advertising materials.
Moreover, any form of street advertising is forbidden that involve direct interactions with passers -by, reports ilsoole24ore.
Those who do not respect this decision risk serious sanctions. Fines vary between 173 and 694 euros, and restaurants or bars that allow such practices can be sanctioned by suspending the activity for three days.
The decision was welcomed by the National Consumer Union of Italy, which emphasized the importance of protecting both locals and visitors to abusive commercial methods.
“Ready with wild intermediation, consumers’ pressure and irregular occupation of public lands”, transmitted the organization in a Facebook post.
The representatives of the Union called the Ordinance “a expected, brave and necessary measure”, arguing that it comes as a response to the real need to combat unfair and misleading behaviors from unauthorized economic operators, which affect both the image of the island and the loyal competition between traders.
“In recent years – recalls the Consumer Union – I have witnessed an uncontrolled spread of behaviors that mislead people in their choices, exploit the naivety of visitors and compromise the dignity of public space. Illegal occupation of sidewalks, stairs, pedestrian streets or historical areas of the island to place the butterfly, common. representatives of the National Union of Consumers in Italy say.
