The Hollywood actor signs a record deal with Decca after decades of composing songs inspired by his childhood in Wales.
Anthony Hopkins states that he has fulfilled his “first wish”, that of signing a record deal, his first single to be released on Friday.
The 88-year-old Hollywood actor’s first album, titled Life Is a Dream, will be released next month by Decca Classics. It is a collection of pieces that he composed over six decades, writes The Guardian.
Debut single ‘Bracken Road’ is inspired by his childhood memories of Margam, South Wales, as well as the streets, meadows, farmland and mountains that surrounded his family home in the 1940s.
Hopkins, who won Oscars for his roles in Silence of the Lambs and The Father, said: “Music was my first desire, my first dream; I’ve been composing music all my life. Some of these pieces have stayed with me for decades and I still catch myself going back to them. My whole life is a dream. Signing the contract with Decca is the honor of my life.”
His music is performed by Grammy Award-winning conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
The Port Talbot-born actor has been composing music since childhood and started playing the piano at the age of four.
He stated: “It was a real privilege to collaborate with the renowned Philharmonic Orchestra and virtuoso soloists, cellist Gregorio Nieto and classical pianist Sergio Tiempo. I extend my deepest gratitude and respect to maestro Gustavo Dudamel, whose artistry is an integral part of this musical journey. With the graceful precision of his wand, he transformed each note into deep and indelible meaning, creating a pictorial landscape that invites the listener to feel and imagine something very personal.”
“Bracken Road” was composed by Hopkins in 1963 when he was a young actor at the Liverpool Playhouse. He pays tribute to Wales in another track on the album, “My Fatherland”, a composition he said he wrote to “honour my humble origins”, adding: “I am the son of my father, the baker.”
