SLA, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rare degenerative disease that causes the progressive paralysis of the muscles. Patients first have spasms or weakness in a member, often followed by speech difficulties.
According to the Mayo clinic, because the disease affects the nerve cells in the brain and the spine that control the muscle movement, patients slowly lose their ability to speak, eat, walk and breathe independently.
There is no cure for SLA, and people usually live between three and five years after diagnosis, according to the Association of Muscle Distrophy. However, some patients can live for decades.
Apart from Dane, other notable stars who have been diagnosed with SLA are Aaron Lazar, John Driskell Hopkins, Eric Stevens, Joe Bonsall, Roberta Flack, Kenneth Mitchell and Stephen Hawking.
