The movie star accuses the prosecutors of abusive accusation and violation of civil rights against him, informs DPA, quoted by Agerpres.
Alec Baldwin claims in the documents filed in the new trial, that the prosecutors intentionally hid evidence that would have absolved him of any guilt and “they sought at every step to make him a scapegoat” for “to maliciously bring up or promote” that trial and to obtain his conviction.
“Blinded by their desire to condemn him”
The actor claims that the accusers, who include Special Prosecutor Kari Morrissey and Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, were “blinded by their desire to condemn Baldwin for all the wrong reasons.”
In a statement to the PA news agency, Kari Morrissey said: “In October 2023, the prosecution team learned that Mr. Baldwin intended to file a civil action in retaliation. We look forward to our day in court.”
The current lawsuit was filed less than a month after prosecutor Kari Morrissey withdrew her appeal of the court’s initial decision to dismiss the manslaughter charge against Alec Baldwin in the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins in 2021 on a set in Santa Fe.
The trial opened against the actor for manslaughter was annulled
Alec Baldwin, the lead actor and co-producer of the film “Rust”was handling a gun when the revolver discharged, killing the cinematographer and injuring the film’s director, Joel Souza.
In June, the manslaughter case against the American actor was thrown out, when a judge dismissed the case based on the misconduct of the police and prosecutors, who withheld from the defense lawyers certain evidence of the ammunition used during the filming.
“Criminal prosecutions should be aimed at seeking truth and justice, not seeking personal or political gain or harassing the innocent“said, after the filing of the new trial, Alec Baldwin’s lawyers, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, in a joint statement given to the PA news agency.
“They trampled on Alec Baldwin’s rights”
According to them, “Kari Morrissey and the other defendants have repeatedly violated this basic principle and trampled on Alec Baldwin’s rights. We initiated this action to hold the defendants accountable for their inappropriate behavior and to prevent them from doing this to others.”
The representatives of the prosecutor Mary Carmack-Altwies did not submit a point of view until the time of publication of this information.
