Former president Traian Băsescu commented, on Saturday evening, both the interventions of the Romanian Army against the drones that penetrated the national airspace, as well as the risks generated by the attacks on the energy infrastructure in the region and the political deadlock in Bucharest.
Referring to the two drones shot down by F-16 planes in the counties of Buzău and Tulcea, Băsescu appreciated, on Romania TV, the army’s reaction, but drew attention to the costs of such operations.
“I was looking at the excitement of shooting down the two drones. The signal is good, but in question, a discussion related to the price. Sure, you can’t make a practice out of hitting a drone with a missile. But what do you do if a drone falls on a school or a refinery?“, asks the former head of state.
In the context of the war in Ukraine, Băsescu believes that the army’s endowment plans must be adapted to the new realities on the battlefield.
“The commands on SAFE need to be adjusted. Some strange commands have been released given the evolution of the war in Ukraine. Why buy a German or American tank when a drone arrives to destroy it?”said the former president.
Call for negotiations with Ukraine on the topic of energy infrastructure
Traian Băsescu also commented on the effects of the attacks on the energy infrastructure in the region, against the background of fears regarding fuel supply and possible price increases.
Băsescu argued that Romania should hold direct talks with the authorities in Kiev to protect national economic interests.
“We must negotiate with the Ukrainians to be very careful, to stop playing with drones when it comes to Romanian interests”said the former president.
Criticism regarding the delay in the formation of the new Government
Traian Băsescu also criticized the delay in appointing a new prime minister, stating that Romania cannot afford to function for a long period with an interim executive.
“Honestly, I don’t have an explanation. That’s why, in public appearances, I have requested several times that a second appointment be made to reach the Parliament, in order to eventually create conditions for solutions other than those for which a majority is not found. That is, the solution of early elections”the former president said.
The former head of state explained why the issue of governance must be resolved quickly.
“We cannot stay until 2028, in the fall, with an interim government. The Government’s problem must be solved as quickly as possible”said Băsescu.
In his opinion, President Nicușor Dan should choose one of the candidates proposed by the main parties.
“We have two parties that had options. The PNL said Siegfried Mureșan, the PSD said Sorin Grindeanu. The president must choose one of these two options and appoint a prime minister to form a Government”said the former president.
“Romania is not Belgium”
Băsescu warned that Romania is not in the situation of states that can afford long periods without a government with full powers.
“Romania is not Belgium. I stay in Belgium for a hundred days, two hundred days without a Government, they negotiate, only Belgium goes alone. With us, without a Government you cannot advance much“, he said.
The former president cited among the priorities that require a functional executive the implementation of the SAFE program, the running of the PNRR, the management of the effects of drought and floods, as well as the development of the new wage law.
“The government must be active, in full activity. There were catastrophic floods. Who lifted a finger from the Government? (…) There is zero urgency to have a Government. Especially since we discuss the wage law and we don’t have a Government”, concluded Traian Băsescu.
