Bolojan: PNL supports a package of measures with an emphasis on reducing state spending. Increasing taxes, hard to avoid

PNL President Ilie Bolojan said on Monday, June 2, that the party supports a package of economic measures in which the reduction of state spending is significantly higher than any budgetary income increases through taxes and taxes.

Following a meeting of the PNL leadership, Bolojan explained that the liberal formation, although it has only 15% parliamentary representation, will advocate for realistic measures, in the context of a major pressure on the budget. The leaders of PNL and PSD met on Monday, June 2, in the national political offices of each party.

“We know what our possibilities are, but I think any rational man understands that things can no longer continue, in the way they have gone so far. It is easy to make statements, draw targets or things that you follow, but contact with reality I think it is quite harsh and, from this point of view, we will support a package of the state, and to increase the state, said Bolojan.

At the same time, the PNL leader stressed that it would be desirable for the state revenues to increase by improving the collection, especially through a more efficient activity from ANAF and anti-fraud. Combating tax evasion must become an applied, not just declarative priority, he said.

However, Bolojan admitted that it is “Very unlikely” that such a package will completely avoid the increase of taxes, considering the commitments made by Romania through the fiscal plan and the need to absorb European funds.

“This cannot be avoided and those who represent the PNL propose to be correct with Romania and tell them the truth”, said Bolojan.

Health system, a major problem

Referring to the health system, Bolojan indicated the underfunding of the National Health Insurance House as one of the major problems and suggested the expansion of the contributors base, including by introducing contributions for very large pensions.

“In terms of, for example, the part of taxes or aspects related to additional taxes, one of the minuses we have is the underfunding of the budget of the National Health House. This is a chronic problem and the extension of the contributors base, for example, those who have very large pensions do not contribute to the budget of the house. Hospitals in Romania can provide decent medical services for the citizens of our country ”, the PNL president also said.

Regarding a possible increase in pensions in 2026, the Liberal leader was reserved, stating that under the current conditions no promises can be made.
